VW Slovakia installs IDENTEC SOLUTIONS RTLS system

“With a passive RFID system you need receivers everywhere you want to locate the car…You need gates so that you can tell if the car is in a specific area limited by a certain gate or gates. With an active system you can locate the car in an open space. You only need the three receivers in order to specify the exact location.”

“Applications such as this started with yard management but now we can track the entire process of the finished car from the final assembly area until the car is loaded onto a truck or train,” adds Hohmann. “Within that process there are different elements of tracking, localisation and identification. The value of our system is that it can be really scalable to the differing needs in that process.”

Shelton, WA – A Kirkland company working on a groundbreaking project with Mason County PUD No. 3 was named as winner last week of the “Smart Power” category in the 2011 Cleantech Open competition. GridMobility won the award for its signal technology, which enables business, industry, and consumers to choose electricity sources based on their personal preferences.

GridMobility is collaborating with PUD 3 and the Bonneville Power Administration on a pilot program to measure the ability to match renewable energy generation with customer energy use. The company’s Renewable Demand Response™ software is testing the time-shift of electricity use based on renewable electricity delivery.

The Cleantech competition, based out of California, is designed to find, fund and foster entrepreneurs with big ideas that address today’s most urgent energy, environmental and economic challenges.

PUD 3 is installing special devices on water heaters that will tell them to turn on or off, based on conditions of the regional electrical system and the amount of renewable energy available. Homeowners can override the device at any time. With modern insulated water heaters, it is unlikely homeowners will notice a change in water temperature.

The hardware for the control devices has been developed by a local company, Allyn Technologies.

PUD 3 provides electricity to nearly 33,000 customers in most of Mason County and small portions of Kitsap, Grays Harbor, and Pierce Counties. The PUD also provides wholesale telecommunications services through a fiber optic network.

It’s 1999, and RFID is relatively new on the scene. Passive tags had been out keeping tabs on the CDs at the music store and keeping razors from “inadvertently” leaving store shelves. Identec Solutions has recently introduced an active RFID tag that has a read-range in excess of 100 feet (100 meters was the spec).

My partner and I at the time had been looking into a logistics problem in the Museum and Tradeshow “High Value” asset market: Tradeshow exhibit for major manufacturer heads to COMDEX in Las Vegas by way of truck (8 tractor-trailer rigs to be exact) and one of the crates is supposed to have the neon logo panel for the exhibit, but it doesn’t. The $8.00/hour warehouse person didn’t check the crate, so now the exhibit manufacturer is CHARTERING a jet to deliver the logo panel to the show floor while Union Laborers stand around waiting for it to arrive (NOT $8.00 per hour, mind you).

IDENTEC IQ-8 Active RFID tags to the rescue. With an active tag on the asset, we could read the existence of the asset inside the crate without having to open it while the forklift is moving the crate onto the truck! RFTrax, Inc. is born.

With $30,000 in seed funding from an exhibit company, we started working on a hardware and software solution to the issue of tracking high-value freight from door-to-door, with Identec Solutions’ active tags at the core.

The problem was bigger than that for the market, however. In-transit damage was commonplace, as the product would move from warehouse to truck to show floor to forklift, and sometimes even air freight was tossed into the mix. We needed to know WHEN the damage occurred in order to recover the insurance.

Identec Solutions once again provided the answer. By integrating a sensor package we designed with the flexible IQ-8 tag, we could now determine the state of the shipping crate BEFORE the trailer doors were even opened! If any of our crates had received a material breach or had suffered excess shock or vibration, we knew it by reading the stored memory on the Identec tag. We also knew the date and time the event occurred, thereby allowing us to inform and bill the appropriate freight custodian in possession of the shipment at the time the event occurred.

As “they” always say, Luck is when Preparedness meets Opportunity. After 9/11, the United States payed keen interest to securing our nation’s shipping ports, and a project called “Operation Safe Commerce” was born. RFTrax was invited to participate, and we received a 99.97% effectiveness rating for our efforts. More on that story in a later post, but suffice it to say we would not have succeeded without the capabilities and support of Identec Solutions and the IQ-8 series of active RFID tags. Thanks, Identec!
